The map curators group held two meetings in
2004-2005 and has thus far held one meeting in 2006.

visit to a map exhibition in the Musée historique de Lausanne

April 2005 in the Mission 21 in Basle (with visits to map exhibitions of
mission maps and the precious maps of the Universitätsbibliothek Basle) and 26
April 2005 Zurich (with visits to the map libraries of the ETH-Library and the
Zentralbibliothek) together with the German Kommission Kartenkuratoren in the
Gesellschaft für Kartographie (s.Cartographica Helvetica 32(2005),p.44-45)

Hans-Peter Höhener from the Central Library in Zurich resigned as
president of the map curators group because of retirement. The new president is
Jürg Bühler from the ETH-Library.
There is a project to catalogue the foreign
maps.
In 2005 the library edition of the Siegfriedkarte was put on to the
internet
and
the Ryhiner Collection was scanned. In the same year the collection
'Rossica Europeana' of Peter Sager was purchased, which also contains
maps.
The data archive of the Federal Office contained at the end of 2005 ca.
37 000 records
At the beginning of 2006 15 collaborators of the Landesgeologie were
transferred from the Abteilung Geologie of the Bundesamt für Wasser und Geologie
to the Bundesamt für Landestopografie (Federal Office for Water and Geology).
'Siegfriedkarte digital' can be seen in the internet under
www.swisstopo.ch/de/products/digital/maps/hiks/Siegfried).
A digitalization of all edtions of the Dufourkarte was carried out
(Project HIKS = Historische Karten scannen)..
In October 2004 the library was transferred to a renovated arsenal (address: Papiermühlestrasse 21A).
In 2004 the Library began with the digitalization of old maps. The
CD-ROMs of this are available for sale at a reasonable price.
The digitalization of the 3000 aerial pictures
of the map department is anticipated.
The
map libraries of the Geographical Institute, of the Geobotanical Institute and
of the chair of forestry were given to the map department and have to be integrated.

The
Central Library began in 2005 with the digitalization of its ca. 1000
manuscript maps.
On 11 February 2005 Alfred Oberli, engraver, cartographer and map
collector died (*3.5.1916). He gave his map collection to the Bundesamt für
Landestopograhie, where it is now catalogued. (See: Cartographica Helvetica
32/2005).

the presidency of Martin Rickenbacher various events and visits to exhibitions

At
the map curators meeting of the German Society of Cartography in Hannover on 26
to 28 April 2004, Jürg Bühler presented a paper on the map library as centre
for geodates service (Die Kartensammlung als Zentralstelle für einen
Geodaten-Service).
At the 12th Colloquium for map historians in Frankfurt on
Main on 30 September to 2 October 2004 the following Swiss papers were
presented:

At
the 21st Conference on the History of Cartography in Budapest 17 to
22 July 2005 Florian Mittenhuber presented a paper on a 'New edition of
Ptolemy's geography',. Philippe Forêt on 'The discovery of climate change: the
mapping of the Edsin-Gol River (Inner Mongolia) and the political significance
of the work done by the Sino-Swedish Expedition (1927-1935)', and Martin Rickenbacher
on 'DigiMeyer ' a digitizing project for the large-size map of the territory of
Basel from the 1680s'.

Hydrologischer Atlas der
Schweiz, 2005-
New editions of the 'Geologische Karte der Schweiz 1:500 000' and the 'Tektonische Karte der
Schweiz 1:500 000' were published in 2005 by the Bundesamt für
Landestopografie.
On
25 May 2005 the Swiss military academy presented to the ETH (on the occasion of
their 150 jubilee) with an almost three metre long panorama by Thomas Germann
(manual silk screen print). This was installed on the roof terrace of the
building.
